There is something so special about doing astro with analog photography. It feels magical to capture it on a digital camera, but it feels even more magical to capture it on film. It makes it feel really real. It’s tangible. I’ve captured the light from stars lightyears away, and converted it into silver crystals.

Here’s a simulation of what the night sky looks like to human eyes. I tried to create exactly what I saw as I laid down in the dirt of this narrow Utah canyon. Hoping to help spread the word about what people can really expect to see when they finally visit a dark sky place - so that people are not disappointed. The night sky is magical - and so are cameras!!

It’s International Dark Sky Week! Stop polluting the skies. Please.

Here are some shots from observatories just outside Tucson Arizona, where DarkSky International was started and the first ever city with a lighting ordinance to protect the skies.

First shot is the VERITAS radio array, second is the Large Binocular Telescope - currently the telescope with the largest light gathering surface in the world!!!!!

It’s eerie the amount of satellites in the sky now. This video shows just how many are streaking across our skies. It’s only going to grow. If left unchecked, it may get to the point that our eyes will not be able to distinguish still stars anymore, the whole sky will look as if it’s moving.
